Why we do this

In the valleys between the Karakoram, Hindu Kush and Himalaya, people speak languages that exist nowhere else on earth. Some have fewer than a thousand speakers left. Folk Whisperings works alongside these communities to record what they choose to preserve: their words, their songs, their seasons, and to build the kind of visits that leave something behind rather than take something away.

Building the library

One place to hold the recordings, photographs and oral histories, so the material outlives the trip that collected it.

Women and the knowledge they hold

Much of the craft, song and household knowledge sits with women. This programme supports them to keep it, teach it and earn from it.

Songs, laments and spoken verse carry a language further than conversation does. They are recorded as performance, not as data.
